Josep Borrell Fontelles

Vice-President of the European Commission and High Representative of the EU

Josep Borrell Fontelles is, since December 2019, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission.

He previously served as Spanish Foreign Minister (2018-2019) and as President of the European Parliament (2004-2007), of which he was a Member from 2004-2009. Having initially been trained as an aeronautical engineer and economist before his entry into politics, he also held several positions in the Spanish government from 1984-1996, was President of the European University Institute (EUI) and held the Jean Monnet Chair in European Economic Integration at the Complutense University of Madrid (2013-2016).
