The Observatory of Populism is celebrating its first birthday! Created in the summer of 2021, this ongoing research project aims to decipher, debate and analyze the various facets (and faces!) of populism. 

Before we break for summer, here’s a recap of the groundwork we’ve laid under the leadership of Dr. Christophe Jaffrelot and Marc Lazar. Read on and be ready to come back in the fall for a promising schedule: we’re excited to announce our upcoming partnership with the Illiberalism Studies Program at George Washington University, a discussion session on the rise of populism in Brazil and an extensive analysis of the populist voices in the crowded American midterm election landscape. 

Across the globe, experts and citizens alike have been sounding the alarm about a tidal wave of populism submerging democracies. What tectonics are driving the resurgence of populism in the liberal age?  What forces shape the different forms of populism?
