This week brings grim economic projections. The Ukraine war coupled with a supply shock from China’s zero-Covid policy add to pervasive global economic stresses. We push for a long-term strategy to fight a looming recession. In other economic news, the Asia program’s newest policy paper assesses the Chinese development model’s sustainability. Zooming in on France, our latest French Brief provides a peek into low-income neighborhoods and pushes past preconceived ideas and biases. We are also back with another Ukraine Beyond the West segment, where we consider Morocco’s position on the war in Ukraine. We turn to Kyiv, where we offer a tentative first look at credible diplomacy options from the ground. To wrap up, all eyes were on Colombia's presidential election, where Gustavo Petro and Francia Márquez both made history. The former as the first leftist-elected President, and the latter as the first Black woman to ascend to the role. The significance of their electoral victory cannot be overstated.
